Integrated Photonics is following, with the obvious differences stemming from its different operational principles, the path undergone by electronics some decades ago. Long fabrication cycles and fabrication costs of application-specific circuits were then overcome through programmable electronics. In a similar fashion, programmable photonics can provide even greater advantages in the currently lower volume market of photonic integrated circuits (PICs) by leveraging economies of scale and shared non-recurring engineering costs. This talk will discuss the basic principles of programmable integrated photonics, focusing on Field Programmable Photonic Gate Arrays (FPPGA). This device is called to revolutionize the PIC industry by providing flexible, multi-functional operation with an unprecedented level of customization. Quoting the famous aphorism attributed to Alan Kay, the best way to predict the future is by inventing. And we are inventing the future of integrated photonics.
Jose Capmany: is Co-founder and COO of iPronics, Programmable Photonics a spinoff company launched in 2019 aiming at developing programmable photonic processors and computing devices. He is also a professor of Photonics at the Universitat Politècnica de Valencia with over 30 years of experience in photonics. In 2021 he received the 2021 Engineering Achievement Award by the IEEE Photonics Society and in 2020 the National Research Award on Engineering by the Spanish Government. He is co-founder of VLC Photonics.
